Getting the word on STDs online

by Ben Halpert 28. January 2010 00:01
Getting the word on STDs online

A Chicago company is offering a Web-based product that not only provides information about sexually transmitted diseases, but also offers testing even if consumers do not have health insurance or a primary care physician.

“They can talk to us and be in a testing center in 15 minutes,” said Julie Springer the general manager of Analyte Media, the company behind STDtestExpress.com.

The use of the Internet for this service is part of a movement known as Health 2.0 that provides Web-based tools to help consumers take control of their health and health care options.

The company takes precautions to protect the consumer’s privacy on the site and in the lab, going to far as to send the results e-mail from the non-descript “PNH Services.” According to the STDtestExpress.com, their labs test people for many conditions, so anyone else in the waiting room wouldn’t know why the consumer was there. The entire process is completed within three days.

Using a GPS in a backpack to keep a child safe

The red dot inching along a digital map of Toronto is my 5-year-old daughter.

While I sit in my downtown office, she's walking to school across town with a GPS device tucked into her backpack that lets me track her online.

Consider it the digital age version of Neighbourhood Watch.

Porn Star Ron Jeremy Urges Parents to Protect Children from Online Porn

Porn Star Ron Jeremy Urges Parents to Protect
Children from Online Porn

Ron Jeremy, the adult film star who is ranked as America's top porn actor by the Adult Video Network, is encouraging parents to take steps to protect children from pornography when they are surfing the Internet. Jeremy is recommending the use of tools such as InternetSafety.com's Safe Eyes family Internet management software to automatically block access to online pornographic content.

"Porn is definitely not for kids. Take it from someone who has worked in the industry for years," Jeremy said. "Internet filtering is an easy way to prevent kids from being exposed to this stuff, and I think that every parent should use a product like Safe Eyes."
